Cabinet Hardware Backplates A backplate is a plate placed between the the door or drawer and the knob or handle. Cabinet hardware backplates can be both functional and decorative. They are functional in the sense that they can protect the door or drawer surface and hide heavily worn wood surfaces around knobs and pulls. Cabinet backplates are also functional in the sense that they can cover holes in the door or drawer (for example holes created when switching from 4 to 3 inch pulls). Backplates are decorative in that they can greatly enhance the look of knobs and pulls and create many style and finish combinations. Adding cabinet backplates can certainly aid in changing the look of your cabinets and drawers. A cabinet backplate can come in many designs and styles and finishes such as polished brass, brushed nickel, antique bronze or even stone. See the Cabinet Hardware Overview page for a listing of styles. Backplates for knobs come with one hole for knobs or two holes for handles. The standard backplate has holes spaced 3 inches apart but you can find other dimensions.
